Why do we have museums? How have they evolved to their contemporary versions? Who do museums serve and who are they accountable to? What are the societal roles of museums? What do we mean when we say “community”? What relationships should/ do museums have with their communities? and what futures can we make real for museums and their communities?

Beginning with a review of museums, from historic roots to contemporary models and contexts, this introductory course will address the societal roles of museums, institutional mandates and structures, industry realities, and relations between museums and communities. Situating museums as public-serving institutions, the course offers learners general knowledge of core frameworks for work in museums and basic skills for work with communities in sustainable, accountable, and accessible and responsive ways.
