This course introduces the principles and practices of preventive conservation in museums and heritage institutions. Candidates will learn to assess and document an artifact’s condition, identify risks, and apply safe handling, storage, display, and transportation methods. The course will explore material characteristics and vulnerabilities, risks posed by environmental factors and agents of deterioration. The course also addresses conservation planning, policy development, and emergency preparedness, as well as the boundaries of practice for non-conservators and when to engage a specialist. Through this course, learners will develop the knowledge and skills needed to provide safe, ethical, appropriate and culturally informed care of collections in diverse museum settings.
