This course examines the evolving roles of museums in society and the developments that shape their purposes in an increasingly complex and diverse world. Learners will explore timely topics such as community engagement, audience research, accessibility, and diversity, considering their implications across all aspects of museum practice. Along the way, you will develop practical skills to initiate, facilitate, and sustain meaningful community engagement within organizations.

Core topics include:

  • Changing relationships between Canadian museums and their communities 
  • Identifying and developing your audience
  • Planning, implementing, and evaluating community engagement initiatives 
  • Co-creating and collaborating through partnerships 
  • Meaningful engagement with Indigenous communities 
  • Designing for everyone: access, inclusion, and care 
  • Remaining relevant, impactful, and trusted for the future 

Museums & the Community will run from October 6 - December 12. Optional live meetings will take place over Zoom on Tuesdays from 6 -7 EST.

Course Instructor: Dr. Simge Erdogan-O'Connor

Dr. Simge Erdogan-O'Connor is the Museum Director at the Museum of Health Care at Kingston. She holds a Ph.D. in Cultural Studies from Queen’s University and an MA in Museum Studies from University College London. From 2020 to 2024, Simge served as Manager and Curator and later Director of Kingston’s oldest operating museum, the Murney Tower Museum, where she led modernization efforts, developed community initiatives, and advanced the museum’s accessibility and inclusivity. Previously, she was a Curator at the Rahmi Koç Museum of Science and Industry and an Education Coordinator at the Elgiz Museum of Contemporary Art. Currently, she serves on the Academic Research Team of the Idaho Museum of International Diaspora (IMID) to enhance innovation and community engagement in museums and heritage and amplify diasporic voices in the museum world. Simge also a former board member of the Kingston and Area Association of Museums, Art Galleries, and Historic Sites (KAM), a grants committee member at the Community Foundation for Kingston and Area, and a Research Associate at the North American Cultural Diplomacy Initiative (NACDI).
