This course explores the evolving roles of museums in society and the key developments that shape the nature and purposes of museums in an increasingly complex and diverse world. It will delve into timely topics such as community engagement, audience research, accessibility, and diversity and consider their implications for all aspects of museum operations and functions while also developing key skills and practices to initiate, facilitate, and support community engagement and embed them in organizational life.

Participants will gain the knowledge and skills required to coordinate the objectives and activities of the museum with the specific needs of its communities.  The course is designed to look at a wide range of issues facing museums in their search for audiences and support.  Emphasis will be placed on finding practical solutions and sharing ideas. 

Core topics: relationships between Canadian museums and their communities in a rapidly-changing social, political and cultural environment re: programming, mission statements, audience development, marketing and fundraising; tools and practical solutions to negotiate support from potential sponsors and to communicate effectively with target audiences.

Course Instructor: Dr. Simge Erdogan-O'Connor

Dr. Simge Erdogan-O'Connor is the Museum Director at the Museum of Health Care at Kingston. She holds a Ph.D. in Cultural Studies from Queen’s University and an MA in Museum Studies from University College London. From 2020 to 2024, Simge served as Manager and Curator and later Director of Kingston’s oldest operating museum, the Murney Tower Museum, where she led modernization efforts, developed community initiatives, and advanced the museum’s accessibility and inclusivity. Previously, she was a Curator at the Rahmi Koç Museum of Science and Industry and an Education Coordinator at the Elgiz Museum of Contemporary Art. Currently, she serves on the Academic Research Team of the Idaho Museum of International Diaspora (IMID) to enhance innovation and community engagement in museums and heritage and amplify diasporic voices in the museum world. Simge also a former board member of the Kingston and Area Association of Museums, Art Galleries, and Historic Sites (KAM), a grants committee member at the Community Foundation for Kingston and Area, and a Research Associate at the North American Cultural Diplomacy Initiative (NACDI).
